Connect rate is the number most outbound teams report first. It is easy to measure and moves quickly, and it looks good on a dashboard. But a connect only tells you that a human picked up. It does not tell you whether that person fits your buyer profile, stayed on the line long enough to hear the pitch, or made the call worth having.

If you want a clearer picture, measure what happens after the connect.

The benchmark that matters

In our most recent batch of activity, we made 51,888 dials and reached a person on 3,256 of them, a 6.3% connect rate. Of those connections, 958 became ICP conversations lasting 60 seconds or more, about 29% of connections.

That second number is the one we manage to. A connection only helps if it turns into a real conversation with someone who matches your ideal customer profile. The 60-second threshold filters out brief hang-ups, gatekeepers who take a message, and wrong-number pickups that inflate connect rates without creating any pipeline.

Hold these figures against your own team. If your SDRs connect well above 6.3%, check whether they are reaching your ICP or just whoever answers. If your connect rate is similar to ours but fewer than a quarter of connections become real conversations, the problem is rarely effort. It is usually the opener or the list.

Diagnosing the gap

Use this split to find where the problem sits:

  • High connects, low conversations: The opener is failing or the list is off. Prospects pick up, hear something that does not register, and hang up. Or they are simply not the right people.
  • Low connects, high conversations: Your list is strong, but coverage is thin. Work on data quality, call timing, and attempts per prospect.
  • Low connects, low conversations: Start with the list. Verify numbers and confirm titles and industries before you touch the script.
  • High connects, high conversations: The opener and list are working. Move your attention to the booking step.

The order matters. Fixing the opener cannot rescue a list full of people outside your ICP, and a clean list cannot save an opener that makes prospects hang up in the first ten seconds.

Qualified meetings are the real outcome

Our ICP-to-booking rate in the same period was 5.4%, which works out to 52 meetings from 958 ICP conversations. That looks lower than what some agencies quote. Agencies quoting 10-20% often count anything placed on a calendar, including tentative slots weeks away.

We only book meetings inside 7 days, never tentative, and only when the prospect qualifies on the call. The results hold up:

  • 84% of recent bookings were set within 7 days of the call, with a median of 5 days out.
  • 87% of held meetings booked in the last 30 days were qualified by the client (76 held meetings).
  • On our longest-running fintech campaign, 92% of held meetings over 60 days were qualified (12 of 13).

When you evaluate an outbound partner, ask what share of their meetings the client later called qualified. That figure tells you more than any booking rate.

What buyers say on the call

A few objections come up repeatedly on fintech and insurtech calls:

  • “We’re too big for this.” Prospects at larger firms often assume a cold call is not meant for them. Framing the call as a peer check-in, rather than a pitch, keeps the conversation going.
  • Per-meeting pricing raises eyebrows. Many prospects push back on it at first, and that skepticism is fair. That is why we show qualified-meeting numbers instead of asking for trust.
  • The booking moment decides the meeting. Across 171 booked meetings, the sentence used on the booking call mattered. We are also testing a text message sent seconds after hanging up, in place of a calendar invite.

Try this today

Pull your last 30 days of booked meetings and sort them by how far out they were set. Count how many fall more than 7 days away, then check how many of those were held and qualified. If distant meetings qualify at a clearly lower rate, shorten your booking window. You may book fewer meetings in the short term, but your AEs will spend less time on empty calendar slots later.
